Vico Equense

Vico Equense belongs to the province of Naples and is 39 kilometers far from Naples, that is the Chief Town of the homonymous province.

Vico Equense has a population of 20.048 inhabitants (Vicani) and a surface of 29,3 square kilometers thus showing a population density of 684,23 inhabitants per square kilometer. It rises 90 metres above the sea level.

Population: The municipality of Vico Equense had a popolation of 18.967 inhabitants accordingly to the results of the national census made in 1991. After the national census made in 2001 the population was 20.048 inhabitants, thus showing during the years 1991 - 2001 a percentual variation of 5,70% inhabitants.

The inhabitants are distributed in 6.481 families with an average of 3,09 people per family.

The place: The territory of the municipality lies between 0 and 1.376 metres above sea level.

The altimetric spawn is thus of 1.376 metres.

Work and workers:There are 254 industrial firms employing 664 people that are the 17,66% of the total of the workers. There are 323 service firms employing 672 people that are the 17,88% of the total of the workers. There are also 328 firms employing 919 people that are the 24,45% of the total of the workers. There are also 61 administrative offices emplying 1.504 workers that are the 40,01% of the total of the workers.

There is a total of 3.759 workers, that are the 18,75% of the inhabitants of the municipality.

Along one of the beautiful and evocative areas of the Neapolitan coast, between Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia, we find Vico Equense,  on a great tufa coastline, plunged in the green and overlooking the gulf of Naples. The territory is divided in 13 fractions including a territory of nearly 30 km².

THINGS NOT TO MISS

La Chiesa dell’Annunziata.  This church was built in the 14th century. It has been a Cathedral and a bishop’s seat until 1799. It represents a rare example of a Gothic church on the Sorrento peninsula.

Monte Faito. Truly a large green lung to the area, its surface area extends for 440 hectares which distributes into three towns. Faito offers the tourist the opportunity to spend some hours immersed in nature. From the mountain you can reach Castellammare di Stabia taking the cable car which offers a spectacle that the tourist shouldn't miss.

Museo Mineralogico (Mineral museum). It was founded in 1992 by the Fondazione Discepolo and preserves nearly three thousand and five hundred kinds of minerals coming from every part of the world. There are also dinosaur fossils preserved in the Palaeolithic section founded in 1997. Call for information at 0818015668.

Museo di Arte Sacra (Holy Art museum). This museum is placed in Convento di San Vito dei Padri Minimi, and has been open since 1995. This museum contains some articles of holy art among the best preserved in Italy. Call for information at  0818798029.

L’Antiquarium equano (Archaeological Museum). This museum preserves archaeological finds, found on the occasion of many excavations in the city's entire territory. In all, there are nearly 600 pieces, dated between the 7th and the 5th century B.C.

Castello Giusso. According to Charles II d’Angiò’ s will, it was built in the 14th century and it is the most well recognized monument of the city of Vico Equense.
